The Point Lepreau nuclear power plant was taken offline Friday because of what’s described as an electrical equipment issue but remained safe and stable according to NB Power.
The nuclear power station was reconnected to the grid yesterday morning at 5:26.
In a report on safety by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Point Lepreau was considered to be on par with the industry average for nuclear plants in Canada. Of the 14 safety and control areas assessed by the commission, the Point Lepreau station received 12 satisfactory ratings and two ratings of fully satisfactory for conventional health and safety as well as safety analysis.
Point Lepreau is seen as being a major part of the provincial goal of having as much as 75 per cent of the electricity used in New Brunswick coming from clean and renewable sources by 2020 without any emissions.
