New Brunswick Public Health is expanding its so-called Heat Alert and Response System to include all major cities in the province including Moncton and Saint John.
Acting chief medical officer Dr. Jennifer Russell says the system is designed to help residents take appropriate action during extremely warm weather conditions.
“As the effects of climate change continue, it is expected extreme heat events will become more frequent in our province and elsewhere,” she notes.
Dr. Russell says heat alerts will be issued the day before extreme heat is expected in the weather forecast and have three levels based on humidex values from 35 to 45 or greater.
The heat alert system began as a pilot project in Fredericton five years ago.
