His body may have been ravaged by a debilitating disease but his mind was as brilliant as the sun.
Stephen Hawking, the best known theoretical physicist of our time has died at the age of 76.
His family says he passed away peacefully at his home in Cambridge England this morning.
Hawking wrote so lucidly about the vast mysteries of time, space and black holes that his book A brief History of Time became an international best seller.
He was also a science pop icon making appearances on the Simpson's and even providing a guest vocal on a song by Pink Floyd.
