Part of Lakefield Elementary school will have a permanent tribute to its retiring vice-principal.

The bus zone where David Ripley greets students will be known as Ripley's Way with its own sign.

He was tell us he very surprised and humbled by the honour.

Ripley says he loves seeing kids start to figure things out and he refers to a recent community day held at the school saying they created a business and sold products for charitiy and all day they were walking around with smiles on their faces knowing they made a difference.

After 32 years in teaching, including 11 at Lakefield, Ripley is looking forward to the next chapter but admits it will be strange to not be at school this September.

Shannon Golding-Naves of the Lakefield Elementary Home and School group helped put the surprise together and tells us he's out there every single morning welcoming the kids.

She says he's phenomenal adding he knows every kid by their first name and last name.
