The need for more affordable housing is one of the issues to be discussed at this weekend’s annual meeting of the Provincial Green Party.
Provincial Green Party leader David Coon has already voiced his support for Housing First as a good way to reduce chronic homelessness.
Faith McFarland of the Community Action Group on Homelessness says moving someone off the streets quickly is key because the longer you’re homeless, the more complex your needs become.
McFarland says the average stay in a homeless shelter in Fredericton is over 34 months whereas in Medicine Hat, Alberta, a similarly sized city, is only 10 days.
