Students across New Brunswick are getting an early start to their Family Day long weekend.
All anglophone and francophone schools closed their doors Friday due to impending weather.
While post-secondary institutions started their day as usual, many cancelled classes as the day progresses.
UNB Fredericton will close for the rest of the day at 1 p.m. while UNB Saint John will close at 2 p.m. All evening classes at both campuses are cancelled.
The Mount Allison University campus is closing at 12:30 p.m. Classes, labs and other events scheduled on campus after 12:30 p.m. are cancelled.
Environment Canada is calling for a mix of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain throughout the day.
A snowfall warning was issued for northern, central and most of southern New Brunswick, including Greater Moncton, Kent County, Fredericton and Grand Lake.
Snow and ice pellets will move in Friday morning and continue throughout the day before tapering to flurries in the evening.
Forecasters said between 15 and 30 centimetres could fall, with the highest amounts expected over central regions.
“Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations,” said the national weather agency.
Meanwhile, a freezing rain warning was initially issued for Saint John, the Kennebecasis Valley, Sussex and Charlotte County.
It was extended late Friday morning to include Greater Moncton, Fredericton and Grand Lake.
Light snow and ice pellets will transition to freezing rain over most areas by noon and change to ice pellets by late afternoon or early evening.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions,” said Environment Canada.
